Fine Art

Paulette Tavormina’s photographs resemble lush 17th-century Old Masters’ paintings rather than digital images. Her intention is to evoke Baroque still lifes by artists such as Francisco de Zurbarán, Giovanna Garzoni, and Caravaggio. Through carefully composed images that balance light and shadow, life and decay, Tavormina captures the beauty of “perfectly imperfect” subjects found in farmers’ markets and flower shops. Her lavish table settings depict scenes of abundance, yet they also contain memento mori elements, such as bruised fruit, wilting flowers, spoiled oysters, and other reminders of the inevitability of death and decomposition.
